Every so often you come across a venue that just makes sense for how we cook and design — and Ruth Bancroft Garden in Walnut Creek is one of those places.

‍If you haven't been, it's not what most people picture when they think "garden wedding." Instead of roses and lawns, it's 3.5 acres of succulents, agaves, and drought-tolerant plants collected from around the world — sculptural, a little wild, completely unlike anywhere else in the Bay Area. Ceremonies happen among giant cacti and silk floss trees in bloom, with the Great Room and outdoor plaza giving you room to move the celebration indoors and out.

‍The garden closes to the public at 4pm, giving a couple's guests the space to themselves well before a 5:30 ceremony. Setup can begin as early as 3pm, and the venue is yours exclusively from 4:30 until 10 or 11 — plenty of runway for a full reception without feeling rushed. The Great Room holds up to 100 guests indoors, with the outdoor plaza adding room for 120 more, and string lighting and umbrellas are worth planning for if you're leaning into the outdoor space after sunset. It's dog-friendly, too, if your pup is part of the day.

What we love most is how little a menu needs to compete with a setting like this. A structural, seasonal spread — something built around what's actually in season, the same way the garden itself is built around what actually belongs in this climate — feels like it was always meant to be here.
